5 Tips to Improve Your Chances of Getting Hired (With Examples)

By ProMed Staff,

Job hunting can be stressful especially if you are an overworked healthcare professional. The challenge of getting noticed and hired has intensified with the ever-changing digital recruiting landscape.

So we decided to write this blog post to help you navigate the complex online hiring process. In this blog we’re going to provide some practical tips that you can use to maximize your results with job search so that you can spend more time doing what you do best- caring for patients.

Use right keywords:

Hiring managers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan hundreds of resumes to save time and effort on their part. These software applications pick resumes that have keywords that match with job description. To get your application past the bots and into human hands, tailor the content on your resume and cover letter. Analyze the job description and look for keywords and key phrases and use the same words in your application -including abbreviations, plural words and job phrases. To increase your chances of being picked up by the ATS application, add skills section near the top of your resume.

Not sure what keywords to use? Here are some resume keyword tools you can use to optimize your resume: Wordle, Jobscan, Worditout, and TagCrowd. Just copy and paste the job description into a word cloud generator content box, and let the tool do the work for you. These tools analyze the words contained in the text and creates a word cloud. Use words from the cloud in your resume in prevalent sizes.

Use hashtags:

Most employers and recruitment agencies today are using social recruiting tools to fill open positions and to advertise job search-related events. They use hashtags to increase their chances to reach their target audience. Here are the most popular hashtags recruiters use to reach out to job seekers. Search for these terms on individual social media platforms to filter jobs specific to your industry or location.

#careers

#employment

#gethired

#hiring

#jobfairy

#joblisting

#jobopening

#jobposting

#jobs

#tweetmyjobs

Do a custom search based on your location and specialty. For example:

#nursejobsnyc

#healthcarejobs

#socialworkerjobsnyc

#travelnursejobsnyc

#medicalassistantjobs

#healthcareadministratorjobs

Take the road less traveled:

Don’t confine your job search to the same job board everyone is using, go beyond it. Look for jobs on niche job boards such as NurseRecruiter.com. There are tons of industry-specific job boards out there, and they all have one thing in common- they help connect the right candidates with the right employers.

Let your resume do the work for you:

When job hunting, you don’t necessarily have to do all the legwork. You can passively search for jobs by uploading your resume or by creating a profile. Every day, hiring managers proactively look for large databases including Monster and CareerBuilder to find qualified candidates, if your resume isn’t posted, you may be missing out. Upload your keyword-rich resume on Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com or niche job boards and let employers find you.

Reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn:

Identify recruiters in your area of expertise. A quick way to do that is by searching their titles on social media channels such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. For Example: search for nurse recruiters or nurse recruiting specialists in your area. Once you identify them, look for the number of years they’ve been in the industry or key accomplishments. Reach out to them and get on their radar.
